CAMBRIDGE — Dorchester Center for the Arts announces the kick-off of the “50 for 50” Annual Appeal, with a goal of $50,000 in honor of the 50th Anniversary. It was spring of 1970 when three local artists and educators - John Bannon, Shirley Brannock, and Bob Tolley - decided that Dorchester County should be served by an art center. By fall of that same year the first official meeting of the new nonprofit organization was held, and today DCA is celebrating 50 years of art for all.

DCA owes these visionary leaders a deep debt of gratitude, but they owe the same to their supporters. The founders began the journey, but the financial support of members and friends has advanced the organization over the past five decades, solidly positioning DCA as a Mid-Shore arts leader.

Now more than ever, considering the financial impact of the ongoing pandemic, DCA needs community support to prepare for the future. A new lineup of virtual programming has been developed in the interest of public safety, and while the organization will keep adapting to a changing environment the commitment remains unchanged: to uplift the community with arts opportunities that build creative connections, support life long learning, and contribute to a healthy and vibrant quality of life for all ages.

Celebrate Artists Nov. 29
DCA has joined the national Artists Sunday alliance to promote local artisans and craftspeople on Artists Sunday, which is celebrated on Nov. 29, the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Artists Sunday, falling between Black Friday, Small Business Saturday® and Cyber Monday, is a day dedicated to encouraging consumers to shop with artists and give something special, unique, and hand-crafted this holiday season.

The public is invited to shop special hours on Nov. 29 from noon - 4 p.m., featuring the Wednesday Morning Artists and Friends Gallery of Gifts exhibit, the decoy carving exhibit, and the gift shop filled with an eclectic mix of hand-crafted originals from over 30 artists.
