Cambridge Yacht Club to hold big racing event
The Cambridge Yacht Club, one of the most historic such organizations on Maryland's Eastern Shore, will host a unique sailing event this weekend.
From Friday through Sunday, it will present the 2022 Hampton One-Design National Championship alongside the 83rd annual Governor Hicks Cup Log Canoe Regatta.
“Many years ago, the Cambridge Yacht Club was active in the bay-wide regatta scene," said D. Trevor Carouge, CYC vice commodore, “and although they have never turned a blind eye to racing, sailing regattas fizzled out for a handful of years.
“Last year, the club was approached by the Hampton One-Design fleet to host their national championship at the club,” said Carouge. “We graciously accepted.”
The Hampton One-Design Class earned its name through being the class boat for the Hampton Yacht Club in Virginia. It has been prevalent on the Chesapeake Bay for over 80 years. So skillful was the design by Vincent J. Serio that older boats still compete successfully with wooden and fiberglass versions. CYC has a heritage of racing Hamptons, with some local residents still active.
The “grandes dames” of the Bay, log canoes are narrow and built for speed. Racers must count on agility and teamwork to overcome the boat's famous instability.
This is the first time since 1966 that the Hampton One National Racing Championship Regatta has returned here, to the delight of sailors and spectators alike.
"The log canoes and Hamptons are both antique boats and both require skillful sailors,” Carouge said.
The Hampton One is readily identifiable by the iconic arrow through an H sail designation. Originally designed by Vincent J. Seria of Warwick, Virginia, in the early 1930s, the majestic, maneuverable sloops have long been active on the Bay.
This exciting event on the Choptank River can be viewed from the floating docks which line the Cambridge Yacht Club or the city marina. Everyone is invited to experience the drama of these awesome antique vessels as they race for prizes and glory.
