One man, four juveniles arrested

CAMBRIDGE – Four juveniles and one man were arrested early Friday after Cambridge Police Department officers used spike strips to end a multi-car pursuit that began in Ocean City.

On Nov. 18, at approximately 5:10 a.m., CPD officers were alerted to the report of a vehicle pursuit that was traveling toward Cambridge from Wicomico County. The pursuit was originally initiated from an armed carjacking that occurred in Ocean City.

In a statement released Saturday, Ocean City police said the incident began when a concerned citizen informed officers of a possible vehicle break-in in the area of the 10-block of Wicomico Street. While officers were en route to investigate, they were dispatched to the 300 block of Dorchester Street for a report of an armed carjacking with a handgun. Officers located the victim, a 73-year-old Brandywine man, suffering from a head injury. The victim was transported to Tidal Health Peninsula Regional with non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim informed officers that he was standing near his vehicle when a group of three males approached him. One of the males pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded the victim’s personal belongings.

During this time, the victim was struck on the back of the head with the handgun. The suspects stole the victim’s vehicle and several personal items, the statement said.

Officers quickly located the stolen vehicle at a convenience store in the area of North Division Street. They attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled northbound on Philadelphia Avenue with two additional vehicles. All three vehicles crossed over the Route 50 bridge, leaving Ocean City.

During the pursuit, stop sticks were successfully deployed on one of the vehicles. This vehicle ultimately stopped in West Ocean City. The driver fled on foot and was located by Worcester County Sheriff’s Office personnel.

Jaquawn Daney was arrested by the Ocean City Police Department. It was later determined that the vehicle Daney was driving was an unreported stolen vehicle from Somerset Street in Ocean City.

Ocean City Police officers did not pursue the remaining two vehicles. The vehicle that was carjacked was later stopped by the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and the driver, Juvenile No. 1, was arrested.

Surrounding law enforcement agencies from Worcester and Wicomico counties initiated a pursuit of the remaining two involved vehicles, one of which was stopped in Wicomico County, with the second continuing into Dorchester County.

While in Dorchester County, members of the nearby agencies were also involved in the pursuit. As the vehicle approached Cambridge, CPD officers deployed a stop stick, a tire deflation device, to end the pursuit. The device ended up striking the passenger-side tires.

The vehicle still attempted to elude law enforcement by failing to stop and traveled on several streets within Cambridge before reaching the Blackwater Landing development. While in the area of Caribbean and Madison avenues, multiple occupants exited the vehicle while it was still in motion and fled on foot.

The vehicle then continued through a barrier fence, stopping in a drainage ditch where it caught fire, leading to an explosion. Members of Rescue Fire Company responded and extinguished the fire.

A K9 Unit from CPD along with other CPD officers attempted a K9 track of suspects in a field, heading toward Stone Boundary Avenue. Another K9 Unit from an allied law enforcement agency also attempted a K9 track of suspects in a different direction.

Aviation was also requested to assist with the search. Other law enforcement agencies located a 14-year-old juvenile suspect on Race Street in the area of East Appleby. The juvenile was found to be a reported missing person from Baltimore and was subsequently transported to Easton.

CPD was then alerted by a concerned citizen in the 500 block of Goldsborough Avenue about an unknown subject walking around their property. CPD and other officers searched the area and found a subject hiding in a vehicle in a driveway.

The subject did not have permission to be on the property or in the vehicle. During the encounter, the subject was not compliant and was attempting to lock the doors of the vehicle.

After a short time, the subject was convinced to exit the vehicle.

The subject was found to be in possession of a quantity of cannabis to indicate distribution, multiple items of stolen property related to the incidents in Ocean City, and a loaded handgun that was also reported stolen in his pocket. The subject was identified as a 17-year-old juvenile from Baltimore. The juvenile was transported to CPD for further investigation.

CPD was then alerted to respond to Walmart in reference to a juvenile arriving at the location covered in mud. Contact was made with the 12-year-old juvenile who was involved in the incident. The juvenile was found to also be from the Baltimore area.

During the investigation in Ocean City, officers discovered that several other vehicles parked in the same area had been broken into. Officers learned that a handgun had been stolen from one of the vehicles that had been broken into.

During the search incident to arrest, Cambridge Police officers located the stolen handgun and several other stolen personal items on Juvenile No. 2.

Numerous personal items were recovered from both the suspects and the vehicles involved. Officers were able to trace the property back to vehicle break-ins in the Ocean City and Baltimore areas.

Through a coordinated effort among the Ocean City Police Department and several allied law enforcement agencies, the following five arrests have been made in this case:

  • Jaquawn Lashawn Daney, 19, Baltimore: armed robbery, robbery, carjacking, did steal property with value at least $25,000 but less than $100,000, reckless endangerment, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and unlawful taking of motor vehicle (two counts). Daney was seen by a Maryland District Court commissioner and was held without bail. Daney has been transferred to the Worcester County Jail.

Juvenile No. 2 was seen by a Maryland District Court commissioner and was held without bail. Juvenile No. 2 has been transferred to the Worcester County Jail.
  • Juvenile No. 3, 14, Baltimore County, was apprehended in Dorchester County. Juvenile No. 3 was released to a parent by the Cambridge Police Department.
  • Juvenile No. 4, 12, Baltimore, was apprehended in Dorchester County. Juvenile No. 4 was released to a parent by Cambridge Police Department.

Agencies involved in the incident in addition to CPD were Maryland State Police, Dorchester Sheriff’s Office, Ocean City Police Department, Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, Rescue Fire Company, Linkwood-Salem VFC, and the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal.
