Cambridge Police Department investigates shots fired

Posted

CAMBRIDGE – On Feb. 7, at approximately 8:11 p.m. there was a “Shot Spotter” alert that was outside of the reportable boundary area within the city of Cambridge. The alert was for a report of six shots fired in the area of Bayly Road in between Chestnut Place and Mace’s Lane.

Because it was outside of the reportable boundary area, police were not initially alerted. CPD received a call of shots fired for that area at approximately 8:36 p.m. in the area of Colonial Avenue.

CPD officers then conducted an investigation of the Shot Spotter system and located the unreported alert. Officers responded to the area searching for any victims, witnesses, damage or evidence of the shots fired. Officers at that time were unable to locate anything.

On Feb. 7 at approximately 10:30 p.m., CPD officers were sitting stationary in a patrol vehicle on Saunders Avenue at Park Lane. Officers could hear multiple shots being fired at a distance, but were unable to determine an exact location.

They then checked the “Shot Spotter” system and observed an incident outside of the reportable area for the same area of Bayly Road at Chestnut Place. CPD, along with Maryland State Police units, responded to the area in an attempt to locate any victims, witnesses, damage or evidence of the shots fired.

Officers did not observe anybody in the area upon their arrival. During a search of the area on foot and in vehicles, officers were able to locate a single spent shell casing in the roadway.

While officers were at the Bayly Road incident, CPD also received a call for shots fired at about the same time from a caller in the 100 block of Glenburn Avenue. Officers and CPD detectives responded to the area and met with the complainant who said shots were being heard throughout the city, but could not specify a location. The incident was found to be the same shots fired that occurred on Bayly Road.

On the same day, at approximately 11:15 p.m., while officers were still on foot in the area of Bayly Road, CPD received another “Shot Spotter” alert for the 800 block of Park Lane. This was also a report of multiple shots that had been fired.

CPD and MSP units responded to the area to investigate. Upon their arrival, nobody was observed in the area. The area where the shots were reported was where CPD Officers had been sitting stationary during the previous shots fired call.

Officers conducted a search of the area on foot looking for any victims, witnesses, damage or evidence of the shots fired. They found multiple spent shell casings in the roadway starting in the area of Park Lane and Skinners Court, traveling down Park Lane to the area of Rigby Avenue. Due to the locations that the shell casings were located and spaced out, it appears that the subject who was shooting the gun was possibly in a vehicle.

Officers continued to search the area, not locating any victims or witnesses or damage. CPD detectives monitored city cameras which also captured the shots fired and a vehicle that turned off prior to coming into view. CPD never received any calls for any victims who had been injured or had damage done to their property.

The “Shot Spotter” system is a tool that CPD is using to report shots being fired in a monitored geographical area within the city limits. The monitored geographical area will almost immediately report any shots that are fired to CPD officers and the Dorchester County 911 Center. Shots that are captured from outside of the monitored geographical area are not immediately reported to CPD or the 911 Center and have to be located by CPD through further investigation.

CPD is asking for any witnesses to the incidents to contact the Cambridge Police Department at 410-228-3333. Witnesses may remain anonymous.
