Cambridge City Council: Five candidates in Wards 1 and 5
CAMBRIDGE – Five residents of Cambridge have submitted the necessary documents to appear on the ballot for a special election to be held Tuesday, June 6. The upcoming special election will fill the remainder of commissioner terms for Ward 1 and Ward 5. The Ward 1 ballot will include Laurel E. Atkiss and Chad Malkus. The Ward 5 ballot will include Robert G. Aaron, former mayor Cleveland L. Rippons and Brian R. Roche.
The Commissioners of Cambridge called for a special election on April 24 to fill the unexpired terms for Wards 1 and 5. Under the city’s charter, the only remedy to fill a vacancy in an elected office is to hold a special election.
Malkus, the current commissioner for Ward 5, is running for Ward 1, the position now held by Roche. Malkus recently moved to Ward 1 and Roche to Ward 5, creating the need for a special election which will be held June 6. The city’s commissioners must live in the wards they represent.
The special election winners will serve until January 2025. In person voting June 6 will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church at 205 Maryland Avenue between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. This polling station will be the only in-person location for both wards. Registered voters may also request an absentee ballot for the June 6 special election.
Requested absentee ballots will be mailed to voters requesting them. Absentee ballot request forms are available on the city’s website at choosecambridge.com/DocumentCenter/View/2229/2023-SE-Mail-In-BallotApplication. Voters can also stop by City Hall to get a paper copy of the form during normal business hours. Only registered voters in Wards 1 and 5 can participate in this special election.
If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in Ward 5, then the two candidates receiving the most votes will proceed to a run-off election to be held July 11. Because Ward 1 has only two candidates, one candidate is almost certain to receive more than 50% of the vote and no runoff is likely for the Ward 1 race.
