SNOW HILL – Cambridge-South Dorchester High School senior Matt Koletsky won two titles at last Wednesday’s Bayside Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The veteran runner placed first in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:09.66, and in the middle-distance 800 meters, in 2:11.23.

The North Caroline High School boys’s team is the 2016-17 season champions, finishing with 88 points. In this, their first season of indoor competition, the C-SD Viking boys placed fourth out of 14 teams that scored, with 72 points.

Because of a mix-up in the girls’ shot put event, in which some teams used an under-weight implement, the girls’ team scores won’t be completed until today, when the shot put competition will be held again.

Today’s meet, scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Worcester County Recreation Center, will be the final regular-season meet of the season. Next week, C-SD heads to the Prince George’s County Athletic Complex for the Region 1A East Championships.

This championship will not only determine the most successful squad in the region, but also qualifiers for the 1A State Championships, also at PG County, on Feb. 20.

The season so far has been something of a whirlwind for the team. Despite a solid core of veterans from the spring outdoor team, many freshmen and rookies have joined.

There’s been a lot to learn, for athletes and coaches, regarding the different aspects of indoor competition, especially the shorter distances of some races and the smaller track for all the runners.

But the athletes have come a long way. From the bulky, 250-pound boys who stomp out to shot put, to the small freshmen girls – all 95 pounds of them – who compete for C-SD on the track, the crew has gained knowledge and confidence in their abilities.

“Being a part of the team means a lot to me, they’re like another family,” Ronke said. “I’m surrounded by good vibes, which makes being a part of the team even better.”

“You learned that you can do this,” Assistant Coach Lois Narr told the sore but happy group at Friday’s practice.

Boys’ results at the Baysides were: NC, 88; Kent Island, 83; Parkside, 74; C-SD, 72; Wicomico, 65; Stephen Decatur, 42; James M. Bennett, 41; Queen Anne’s Co., 24; Mardela, 8; Kent Co., 4; Snow Hill, 3; Easton, 2; and Crisfield, 2.

The Bayside Conference comprises teams from 1A, as well as larger 2A and 3A schools. The Viking boys were the highest-scoring 1A team.

“Having our team be able to compete in Baysides and perform better than we expected is phenomenal,” Ronke said.

In track and field meets with seven or more teams, points are earned down to eight places in an event. So first place gets 10 points, second place 8, third place 6, fourth place 5, down to eighth, which earns 1 point.

Today’s clash will be the last warm-up before the big shows in Landover. The coaches will use the data gained to help them determine where athletes can best be placed to score the maximum number of points against the 17 other 1A East teams.

The task is made more challenging because while in the spring, 1A has four divisions, and the East is familiar to Viking coaches, in the winter there are only three divisions. Some 1A East indoor teams come from schools that C-SD has not ever seen in track and field competition.
