CAMBRIDGE – The Dorchester County Public Library is offering the services of a 3D printer.

What is a 3D printer?

A 3D Printer is a machine that uses computer aided design (CAD) to turn materials into three-dimensional objects. 3D printed objects start with a digital 3D model. The model is placed into “slicing” software and is broken down into thin layers. The software creates instructions for the 3D Printer called G-code that tells the machine what shape each layer of the object should be. Once the code is inserted into the 3D Printer, it will print the object out, layer by layer, until complete.

What types of things can a 3D printer make?

All types of things! 3D printers can make everything from auto parts to medical equipment to novelty items. Stop by the Cambridge branch to see examples of items made by our 3D printer.

How much does 3D printing cost?

Our pricing is $0.10 per gram of material, rounded up to the next $0.25.

How do I order a 3D print?

Stop by the Cambridge branch of the library and ask for a copy of our policies and a 3D Print Request Form. Decide what you would like printed out by choosing a 3D model from a website like Thingiverse.com or Cults3D.com. Send the URL link of the 3D model to infodesk@dorchesterlibrary.org. You can also make your own 3D Model from a program like TinkerCAD, Blendr or SelfCAD and email us the STL file. Fill out the 3D Print Request Form with your customizations (color, size, etc.) for your order. Turn in your request form to the Info Desk to ensure your 3D model link or STL file was received.

You may also place your order online by visiting our website at dorchesterlibrary.org/3d-printing.

How long before my 3D print item is ready?

When we confirm your order, we will also let you know approximately when it will be available for pickup.
