Books in the Belfry: Spotlight on digital collections

Posted

CAMBRIDGE – This week’s spotlight is on the library’s digital collections of lending materials. The first collection is made available through Maryland’s Digital Library and includes thousands of eBooks, audio books and magazines for all ages, with many magazine titles available in a language other than English. Library patrons can check out up to 10 items at a time, place up to 10 holds, and create a list of items they want to borrow in the future.

Users can read across devices, stream content or download titles for offline use, and listen to audio books in the car. Borrowed items can be accessed through a web browser, a Kindle device or the free Libby app, available from the App Store and Google Play. Please note that the Libby app replaces the Overdrive app.

Libby has several accessibility features that readers may find helpful. Users can reduce color and text variation, reduce motion and vibrations, change font size, turn on dyslexic font, and zoom into pictures, maps and other images. Libby also works with screen readers. To learn more about using Libby, including the accessibility features, visit help.libbyapp.com.

The library’s second collection of digital material is available through Hoopla. Hoopla features eBooks, audio books, comics, music, movies and TV programs for all ages. Borrowers can check out eight titles per month and titles can be streamed or downloaded for offline use. Hoopla features an optional kids mode with different age ranges to ensure age-appropriate viewing. Enjoy Hoopla content via your smartphone, tablet, desktop or television.

Both Libby and Hoopla are completely free and can be accessed by going to dorchesterlibrary.org, clicking on “Library Catalog” and then clicking on “Stream or Download.” You will need a valid email address and your library card to create an account and you will need to create a separate account for each service.

When prompted to choose your library in Libby, please select Talbot County Free Library. Give us a call or stop in if you have any questions or run into any technical difficulties. We hope you enjoy our digital collections!
