Books in the Belfry: Free resource for legal assistance

The library would like to make readers aware of a valuable, free resource. “Maryland Court Help” offers free legal assistance in civil cases for individuals who do not have a lawyer.

Get help with understanding court documents, completing court forms, preparing for hearings and mediation, and learn about your legal rights and obligations. Talk with a lawyer for help with divorce, custody, debt collection, landlord tenant issues, domestic violence, expungement, and peace and protective orders.

There is no income eligibility requirement. Access services remotely from the Cambridge and Hurlock library branches, or get in-person help at the Dorchester District Court on Fridays.

Looking for something to read? Check out our “First in a Series” display in the adult fiction section of the Cambridge branch. Whether you’re interested in cozy mysteries, paranormal fiction or steamy romance, you’re sure to find something.

Feeling creative? Our Hurlock branch is offering a free take-home craft for May. Stop in and get your DIY No-Bake Playdough, while supplies last.

Our patron pick of the week is “Horse” by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks. The horse is Civil War era racehorse Lexington and the story is about racism, art, science, love and obsession.

Our patron calls it “a wonderful book” and says, “the ending hit me right between the eyes.” If you would like to recommend a book, stop in or email us at infodesk@dorchesterlibrary.org.

Did you know that the Dorchester County Public Library is not a county agency? We are actually a private 501(c)3 nonprofit. The limited funding we receive from the state, county and some of the local towns barely covers overhead and staff salaries.

Funding for everything else, including collections development and programming, comes from grants, donations and money raised by the Friends of the Library. How can you help the library continue to provide vital community services? Lobby your elected county and city officials for increased funding, join the Friends of the Library, serve on the library's Board or attend our events.

The Dorchester County Public Library needs your support! Stop in or call us at 410-228-7331 for more information on how you can help.
