TOP STORIES

TEN--FRENCH OPEN GUIDE PARIS — Much of this French Open can best be viewed through the prism of Rafael Nadal’s absence. For so many years, the goings on at Roland Garros were defined by Nadal and his unprecedented success at the place: 14 championships, a 112-3 record. And this year, what happens in Paris is significantly altered because he is not in the field — something that last happened in 2004. Nadal had hip surgery Friday. His 37th birthday is Saturday. The top third-round match on Saturday is Coco Gauff against Mirra Andreeva. By Howard Fendrich. SENT: 800 words, photos. Play begins at 5 a.m.

BBO--YANKEES-DODGERS LOS ANGELES — Clayton Kershaw beat the Yankees for the first time with nine strikeouts over seven innings of four-hit ball, and Mookie Betts hit two more homers in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 8-4 victory over New York. Betts hit a leadoff homer and an RBI single during Los Angeles’ six-run, eight-hit first inning against Luis Severino. Kershaw was 0-1 in his four previous starts against the Yankees over his 16-year career. Josh Donaldson hit two homers and Giancarlo Stanton also homered in both sluggers’ first game back from lengthy injury absences for the Yankees in the opening game of this high-profile interleague series. By Greg Beacham. SENT: 800 words, photos.

BKN--PISTONS-WILLIAMS DETROIT — Monty Williams is taking over the Detroit Pistons. The team says it has reached an agreement with Williams to fill its coaching vacancy. Terms of the deal were not announced, but a person familiar with the situation told the AP on Wednesday night that it was a six-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the move had not been announced at the time. The 51-year-old Williams was fired by Phoenix on May 13, two years after reaching the NBA Finals and a year after he won the league’s coach of the year honors. By Larry Lage. BBN--BRAVES-DIAMONDBACKS PHOENIX — Merrill Kelly threw seven strong innings, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. ripped a two-run double and the Arizona Diamondbacks won their season-high sixth game in a row by beating the Atlanta Braves 3-2. It was the first game of a series between two of the top teams in the National League. It’s no surprise the Braves are among that group, but the emergence of the Diamondbacks has caught some by surprise. Arizona is now 12 games over .500 for the first time since 2018 and on a six-game winning streak for the first time since 2020. The Braves have lost five of their past seven. By David Brandt. BBA--MARINERS-RANGERS ARLINGTON, Texas — Jon Gray pitched two-hit ball over seven innings to win his fifth consecutive start, Marcus Semien scored the game’s first run after extending his MLB-best hitting streak to 21 games and the AL West-leading Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 2-0. Gray improved to 6-1. He struck out five and walked one. Mariners starter Luis Castillo limited the Rangers to one run over his seven innings with six strikeouts. Texas entered the game averaging an MLB-best 6.29 runs per game. Semien scored on Nathaniel Lowe’s sacrifice fly in the sixth and Corey Seager later had an RBI double. By Stephen Hawkins. HKN--STANLEY CUP-RUSSIAN DUO LAS VEGAS — The Russian players left playing in the Stanley Cup Final say they’re focused on hockey and not their country’s war in Ukraine. Florida goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky says he has not thought about not being able to bring the Stanley Cup home to Russia if he wins it. Vegas forward Ivan Barbashev is not worried about that being four wins away from another NHL championship. Barbashev spent his day with the Cup in Moscow in 2019 after winning it with St. Louis. The players say they’re far more worried about the final than politics. By W.G. Ramirez and Stephen Whyno. UPCOMING: 660 words, photos by 6 a.m.

GLF--LPGA TOUR JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Minjee Lee matched the tournament best with an 8-under 64 for a share of the lead Friday in the LPGA Tour’s weather-delayed Mizuho Americas Open. Cheyenne Knight had a 68 in the inaugural event to join Lee at 7-under 137 atop the tightly bunched leaderboard that features five top-10 players and promising newcomer Rose Zhang Play was suspended late in the afternoon for 1 hours, 47 minutes because of dangerous weather conditions near Liberty National and the last groups barely finished before darkness on the course adjacent to the Hudson River with a spectacular view of the New York City skyline and the Statue of Liberty. The fifth-ranked Lee, from Australia, birdied eight of the first 12 holes in a bogey-free round. By Tom Canavan. SENT: 730 words, photos.

GLF--MEMORIAL DUBLIN, Ohio — Justin Suh has the 36-hole lead at the Memorial. Hideki Matsuyama is one shot behind. Both can thank their putters for that. Suh made eight putts from the 10-foot range and longer. That includes a birdie on his final hole for a 66. Right behind is Matsuyama. The Japanese star made a pair of long birdie putts at the end of his round for a tournament-best 65. Patrick Cantlay is a two-time Memorial champion. He’s two shots behind. And four shots back were Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm. Rahm began his round of back-to-back bogeys and recovered for a 70. By Doug Ferguson. SENT: 850 words, photos.
