Two students injured in shooting at Delaware State University

DOVER — Two students were injured in a shooting at Delaware State University early Saturday morning, the university said in a press release.

The students were taken to the hospital for treatment for their injuries, the statement said.

There is no longer any active threat on campus, said Carlos Holmes, director of news services for the university, in a brief interview around noon.

Mr. Holmes said the university is “not ready to report on any arrests yet” related to the incident, which occurred at about 1:45 a.m., according to an alert the university sent out at about 5:21 a.m. Saturday.

“It’s an ongoing investigation,” he said.

Two DSU students were shot and are currently being treated at a hospital for their injuries, Mr. Holmes said. He said that part of the university alert —  which stated four people had been injured — was not correct.

“My thoughts this morning are with the students and families as well as any other members of our university community affected by this moment,” university President Tony Allen said in the release. “We will pursue justice in this matter. Our commitment to ourselves and each other leads us to respond to any challenge made against our collective and individual senses of security.”

The university will hold a forum on Tuesday with any updates related to the shooting, as well as to assure the university community’s “voices are heard,” Mr. Allen said.

The university president encouraged those attending the football season opener this afternoon to “come together in solidarity as we cheer on our student-athletes, coaches, and staff.” There will be additional security at all home games, he added.

“At Delaware State University, we continue ‘to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.’ And that will never change,” Mr. Allen said.
