Sussex County earns financial-reporting award for 20th time

GEORGETOWN — Sussex County’s financial management has earned a national excellence award for the 20th straight year.

Last month, the Chicago-based Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada awarded the county its Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its 2021 comprehensive annual financial report.

The honor is among the highest forms of recognition for governmental accounting and financial reporting, and it marks the 20th consecutive year Sussex County has earned the association’s top prize.

The award acknowledges Sussex County’s yearly financial report, which was judged by an impartial panel to meet the association’s high standards. The document includes the county’s annual audit, showing assets, liabilities, equity, revenues and expenses.

It also contains information about demographics and the local economy. Those details help those reviewing the report — such as investors — to better gauge Sussex’s financial condition.

“We are honored and humbled once again to be recognized with this very prestigious distinction from our peers,” county finance director Gina A. Jennings said.

“The greatest reward for our financial team, though, is not in winning awards but in maintaining the public’s trust every day. We take that role very seriously, and I believe the dividends from that commitment are reflected in the county winning honors such as this year after year.”

County administrator Todd Lawson offered congratulations to Ms. Jennings, deputy finance director Kathy Roth and the accounting staff for their efforts.

County Council President Michael Vincent also gave kudos. “Mrs. Jennings, congratulations to you and your staff. This is not something that is the first time. You have won this numerous times,” he said.

“We realize how great of a job you do.”
