POCOMOKE CITY — There will be a celebration of Juneteenth and a reunion of those whose families attended the former Sturgis School on Saturday, June 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Activities will take place at the site of the Sturgis One Room School Museum, 209 Willow Street, just across from the Delmarva Discovery Museum.

There will be tours of the former school, music by DJ Rob Little, fried fish and fries by Unionville Lodge 45, and a bounce house for kids.

The Sturgis School is the only African American one-room school in Worcester County that retains its original integrity. It was built circa 1900 on Brantley Road on land purchased by William Sturgis in 1888.

It operated for 37 years with one teacher serving grades 1-7. It closed its doors in 1937 and students transferred to the Stephen Long School in Pocomoke City.

The building served for several years the home of the aging Mr. Sturgis, and after his passing it fell into disrepair.

In 1996 a group of citizens under the leadership of the Worcester County Historical Society purchased the old school from the Sturgis family and moved it downtown and it is now managed by the Sturgis One Room Museum Inc. Next door is the circa 1850 Heritage House.

Guest speakers during the day include Sharnell Tull a.k.a. Sista Big, local pastors, and others. Sidewalk vendors include baked goods, tie-dye apparel, jewelry, clothing, Mary Kay, Scentsy, gift baskets, and more. Vendors are still accepted and registration is open at sturgisschoolmuseum.com/events.
