Polytech High scored five runs in the second inning and three more in the third en route to an 11-1 win over Lake Forest in Henlopen Conference baseball on Thursday afternoon.

Winning pitcher Miguel Rivera, Cole Garey (2 RBI), Chase Bayley and Logan Oleshenske all had two hits for the Panthers (2-0).

Rivera had six strikeouts in four-plus innings.

Smyrna 10, Indian River 0: John Barkley pitched a five-inning one-hitter with four strikeouts to earn the shutout for the Eagles.

Smyrna (2-0) broke open a 1-0 game with six runs in the top of the fourth. Shawn Dulin (3 RBI) and Brandt Penuel (1 RBI) had a pair of hits each for the Eagles with Barkley adding an RBI.

Ryan Engh had the Indians’ lone hit.

Cape Henlopen 10, Milford 5: The Vikings rallied for six runs in the fourth to overcome a 4-2 deficit.

Winning pitcher Austin Elliott went 4-for-4 with three RBI while striking out nine in four innings. Zack Gelof had two hits and scored three runs.

Shawn Snowden had two RBI for the Buccaneers.

Caesar Rodney 5, Seaford 3: The Riders scored single runs in each of the last five innings to pull out the victory.

Thomas Pomatto, Steven Platt and Quinton Ivy combined to pitch a five-hitter for CR.

The Blue Jays tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Softball

Smyrna 5, Indian River 2: The Eagles took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the first inning in their conference win.

Tayler John (3-for-3, double, 2 RBI, 1 run) paced Smyrna’s six-hit attack while pitcher Jessica Anderson improved to 2-0.

Callie McDowell had an RBI double and scored a run for the Indians.

Caesar Rodney 14, Seaford 1: The Riders scored six runs in the first to take control of the Henlopen contest.

Cape Henlopen 6, Milford 2: Jordyn Virden and Kaeli O’Neill-Willey had three hits each in the Vikings’ season-opening victory.

Riley Shields threw a five-hitter with seven strikeouts while Hannah Jones and Samantha Frederick had two hits apiece as Cape finished with 13 hits in the contest.

For Milford, Nia Bowe had a two-run single in the fifth and Megan Fry went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Rising Sun, Md. 8, Delmar 7: Rising Sun outscored the Wildcats, 3-2, in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for the nonconference win.

Middletown 5, Sussex Tech 0: The Cavaliers broke open a scoreless contest with a four-run third.

Raven pitchers Sarah James and Taylor Wroten combined for 11 strikeouts while Brooke Ward and Taylor Collins each collected two hits.

Delmarva Christian 22, Del. Public Safety/Security 1: Sierra Jones threw a five-inning no-hitter with 13 strikeouts for the Royals.

Morgan Waide (2 doubles, 6 RBI), Camryn Thompson (triple, 4 RBI) and Malaurie Noble (triple, double, 1 RBI) led Delmarva Christian offensively.

Lacrosse

BOYS, Lake Forest 11, Milford 8: The Spartans built an 8-4 lead after three quarters before holding off the Buccaneers.

Austin Aguilar had five goals and an assist for Lake with Dawaunta Parker netting three goals. Benjamin Moore had two goals and an assist with Carter Kenton scoring the other.

Polytech 15, Hodgson 2: Josh Davis had four goals and two assists as the Panthers won their second game in a row.

Tom Gilmore added three goals and four assists while Griffin Ott also had three goals. Zach Maheu scored twice with Jake Davis, Jose Santos and Chris Rutkoski adding the others.

Nathan Fairbanks made five saves for Polytech, which outshot the Silver Eagles, 34-10.

Caesar Rodney 15, Sussex Central 3: Luke Rankin netted four goals and a pair of assists to lead the Riders (2-0) to the Henlopen North win.

Delmar 12, St. Andrew’s 3: The Wildcats improved to 2-0 with the win.

Glasgow 6, Delmarva Christian 5: In a contest that was close throughout, the Dragons won it in overtime.

GIRLS, Smyrna 15, Delaware Military 4: Maddie Price tallied six goals and an assist to spark the Eagles (2-0).

Shabnam Noroozi-Pooya and Kaila Hindt each added three goals and an assist for Smyrna, which led 9-1 at halftime. Sierra Duman, Juliana Kolakowski and Allison Wheatley also scored goals with goalie Gabrielle DiRusso making five saves.

Cape Henlopen 15, Parkside, Md. 3: Lizzie Frederick netted five goals while Evelyn Shoop and Cailey Thornburg had three apiece to power the Vikings (2-0).

Cape also got goals from Tess Bernheimer, Kaitlyn Klabe, Catherine Frederick and Chloe Schaeffer in a game it led 10-2 at halftime.

Girls’ soccer

Dover 2, Polytech 1: The Senators edged the Panthers in a Henlopen Conference Northern Division contest.

Lake Forest 4, Woodbridge 1: Hannah Fox scored back-to-back goals to break a 1-1 tie in the Spartans’ Henlopen South win.

Lauren Sharp and Julianna Tyndall also scored goals for Lake with Alyssa Banks making four saves. The Spartans finished with advantages of 18-8 in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks.

Alexis Thomas scored a first-half goal for the Raiders.

Caesar Rodney 9, Sussex Central 0: Aleya Cummings collected four goals and an assist in the first half as the Riders won their Henlopen North opener.

CR (2-0), which scored nine first-half goals for the second-straight game, also got two goals and two assists from Lynsy Gruwell and single goals from Cowan Cummings, Jameah Nixon and Jesse Prillaman.

The Riders outshot the Golden Knights, 28-2.

Appoquinimink 4, Sussex Tech 1: Wuendy Cruz-Velasquez gave the Ravens a lead 18 minutes into the contest but the Jaguars answered with four straight goals.

Appo held advantages of 12-6 in shots and 7-3 in corner kicks.

Laurel 2, Sussex Academy 1: The Bulldogs scored twice in the first half before picking up the Henlopen South victory.

Delmarva Christian 4, Howard 0: Skylar Bennett and Kirah Harmon tallied two goals apiece to pace the Royals.

Delmarva Christian, which got three saves from Layne Morris, outshot the Wildcats, 32-3.

College baseball

Washington College 3, Wesley 2: The Wolverines had the tying run in scoring position in the ninth but couldn’t get it home before falling to 9-11.

Trevor Mears (Sussex Central) and Eric Willey (Woodbridge) each finished with a pair of hits and an RBI while Mike Calvarese went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Pitcher Andrew Weaver took the loss despite not allowing an earned run.

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Baird 9, Wesley 8: The Wolverines cut a three-goal lead to just one with 8:02 remaining but couldn’t pull even in the nonconference loss.

Foley Wassmuth and Bailey Olds each recorded a goal and two assists for the Wolverines (2-6) while Paige Brehm netted a pair of goals in her collegiate debut. Fallon Fore scored twice and Brianna Bacon netted a goal and dished out an assist.

Nyi Wright led the Wolverines with four caused turnovers and seven ground balls while Bacon and Wassmuth each snagged a pair of draw controls.

Goalie Savannah Clough made eight saves, scooped four ground balls and caused a turnover.
