Delaware South edged Burlington County, 2-0, to finish unbeaten in its first day at the Carpenter Cup softball tournament on Tuesday.

The defending tourney champion, Delaware South also rallied to top Philadelphia Catholic, 4-3, and Delaware North, 4-1, in the high-school all-star event event being played in Philadelphia’s FDR Park.

The wins put Delaware South in the high school all-star tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday. The downstaters are slated to play Lehigh Valley at 11 a.m.

The tourney concludes on Wednesday with the champion needing three victories to take the title.

In its second game, Delaware South trailed Philadelphia Catholic, 3-1, before scoring the final three runs of the contest to pull out the win.

Against Delaware North, a two-run homerun by Laurel’s Kylee Hill sparked the downstate squad to the win.

Delaware North rebounded from the opening loss to beat Burlington County, 5-1, and Philadelpha Catholic, 9-1. The upstate all-stars take on SOL on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Since the Carpenter Cup tournament was created in 2005, Delaware South has won the championship five times — including twice in the last three years that a tourney was held.

College basketball

UD women add pair of transfers: The Delaware women’s basketball program added transfers Rebecca Demeke (Rhode Island) and Michelle Ojo (George Washington) to the roster for the upcoming season.

A 6-foot guard from Toronto, Demeke spent last season at URI and the previous season at N.C. State. As a sophomore, she helped lead the Rams to the most wins in program history at 22-7.

During her rookie campaign with the Wolfpack, Demeke played in 14 games with two starts and averaged 2.6 points and 1.6 rebounds in 10.3 minutes per outing. She was the only freshman to start a game for the Wolfpack.

A 6-foot forward out of Virginia Beach, Va., Ojo was rated as a three-star recruit and the No. 14 wing in the class of 2021 by ESPN HoopGurlz. She helped lead Princess Anne to the VHSL 5A State Championship as both a senior and junior.

During her senior season she was named first-team All-State after tallying 10.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.9 steals and 1.6 blocks per game.

College baseball

Hornets’ Paige honored: Delaware State sophomore shortstop Trey Paige has been named to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Division I East All-Region second team.

A three-time MEAC Player of the Week and one-time Co-Player of the Week, Paige was first Hornet to lead the MEAC in eight different hitting categories.

The All-MEAC first-team shortstop also took home the league’s “triple crown” title, leading the league in batting average (.412), home runs (13) and RBI (43).
Paige’s batting average ranks him eighth in Division I. He is also eighth in the nation in on-base percentage (.513).
