Two juveniles arrested after robbery attempts in Dover

DOVER — Two New Jersey teens were arrested Thursday after two attempted robberies in parking lots, authorities said.

The males, ages 15 and 16, were taken into custody after incidents at the Gateway West Shopping Center at 1:45 p.m. and at a Del-One Federal Credit Union branch at 1:56 p.m., Dover Police spokesman Master Cpl. Ryan Schmid said.

In the first case, at 1030 Forrest Ave., police determined that the older male, dressed in all black, wrapped his arms around a man and demanded his keys, Cpl. Schmid said. The man escaped and called 911.

The older suspect fled in a red vehicle with New Jersey registration, police said. A computer check later indicated that the 2012 Hyundai Azera had been stolen in Carneys Point Township, New Jersey, earlier in the week.

Dover police received another attempted-robbery call 11 minutes later. A female reported that a suspect had accosted her as she was parking her vehicle at the Del-One branch at 270 Beiser Blvd., Cpl. Schmid said,

That suspect also fled in a red passenger vehicle with New Jersey registration, after the female reentered her vehicle and closed the door, he said.

As officers arrived at Del-One, the juveniles were seen fleeing the area on foot, authorities said. They were taken into custody without further incident.

The stolen vehicle was located behind Gateway West. No injuries were reported.

While Carneys Point Township police will conduct the stolen-vehicle investigation, both juveniles were arraigned at the Dover Police Department.

The 15-year-old, of Penns Grove, was charged with second-degree attempted robbery (two counts), receiving stolen property over $1,500, second-degree conspiracy and offensive touching. He was committed to Stevenson House Detention Center in Milford on $16,100 cash bail.

The 16-year-old, of Salem, was charged with receiving stolen property over $1,500 and second-degree conspiracy. He was released on unsecured bond.
