MILLSBORO — Aaron Wharton, 53, of Millsboro, was arrested after allegedly assaulting four police officers Monday, authorities said.

Delaware State Police Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said that, at approximately 6:34 p.m., troopers responded to a residence in the 20000 block of Laurel Road regarding a complaint of criminal mischief.

The arriving trooper attempted to contact Mr. Wharton, who fled on foot, police said. The suspect allegedly threw dirt into the trooper’s eyes and struck the trooper in the face with his fists, causing injury, Cpl. DeMalto added.

After he was taken into custody, Mr. Wharton continued to struggle with officers at the scene, kicking a responder from the Selbyville Police Department and spitting in the faces of two other troopers, authorities said.

After being detained, Mr. Wharton refused medical treatment for injuries resulting from the incident.

He was charged with second-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, offensive touching of a law enforcement officer (two counts), offensive touching with a bodily fluid (two counts) and criminal mischief. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, on $32,200 cash bond.
