ROXANA — On this night, in the opening of the Senior League Softball World Series, First State bragging rights belonged to Lower Sussex.

Tournament host Lower Sussex rolled over U.S. East region champ Camden-Wyoming Monday night, meshing timely hitting, errorless defense and the no-hit tag-team by pitching of Kinsley Hall and Megan Daisey for a 10-0 victory in the all-Delaware opener.

The game ended after five innings under the 10-run rule.

“I’m super proud of all the girls,” said Lower Sussex Manager Sarah Hoban. “Both pitchers did a great job on the mound. The hitters did a great job at the plate, speed on the bases and the defense backing our pitchers up. It was a total team win.”

Laniyah Lewis’ two-run homer in the first inning was all Lower Sussex needed.

“That was a beautiful hit from Laniyah, to get that fire started for us,” said Hoban.

Hall struck out four in four innings of work and Daisey fanned two of the four batters she faced in the fifth.

“We are very fortunate,” Hoban said. “We have five pitchers on the team that I’m very confident that, at any time, one of the five will go in and do their job.

“I’m so proud of Kinsley and Megan for going out there and combining for that no-hitter.”

The 10-run ruling came into play when Shaniya Lewis singled in Lower Sussex’s 10th run, capping a two-run fifth.

The early deficit was too much for Camden-Wyoming, whose journey in postseason tournament play has followed the comeback trail, in districts, states and regionals.

Camden-Wyoming manager Gary Kennard believes his squad will bounce back. Camden-Wyoming faces the Philippines, the Asia-Pacific region champ Tuesday at 8 p.m.

“We’re just going to let this one fly. We knew that they are a tough team,” said Kennard. “We started off losing against Smyrna. We bounced back from that. We won that one. We went to the states, and we lost one there. Same thing. It’s kind of our way of playing. We’re going to lose, come back, and get you.

“I think the girls had a lot of jitters tonight. They’ll come back,” Kennard said.

Lower Sussex made it 5-0 with three runs in the bottom of the second. Macy Blades started it off with a double, Aniyah Blake legged out a bunt single, and Hall followed with a two-run double. Hall later scored on a sacrifice by Lily Hoban.

The Lower Sussex lead grew to 8-0 in the fourth. An RBI single by Hoban and Jayla Shaub’s two-run double were the big hits.

The District 3 champions resume pool play on Tuesday night with an 8 p.m. clash with the U.S. Southwest region champ from Texas.

Lower Sussex qualified for the World Series berth July 19, topping Laurel/Nanticoke/Woodbridge twice to claim the District 3 crown and the automatic berth.

“I know the girls have been very excited. They have been dreaming about this opportunity, this moment for a long time,” said Hoban. “I was a little curious how they’d come out. Would there be nerves or too much excitement? I think they did a great job and I’m super proud of them.”

The tournament, featuring 10 teams, runs Aug. 1 through 7. Pool plays concludes Thursday.
