Local roundup: Laurel, Central both reach softball state finals

No. 17 Laurel scored the final two runs to knock off fifth-seeded Delaware Military, 7-5, in Saturday’s DIAA softball state quarterfinals.

Laurel (14-6) will next face top-seeded Caravel in Wednesday’s semifinals.

The Bulldogs ended the regular season with a 9-4 loss to the Buccaneers.

Sussex Central 8, Wilmington Charter 3: The third-seeded Golden Knights advanced to the state semifinals for the second straight year with the win over the No. 11 Force on Saturday.

Central (17-3) will face No. 2 Appoquinimink (18-2) Wednesday. The Jaguars blanked Middletown, 5-0, in the quarterfinals.

Caravel 4, Caesar Rodney 2: All the game’s runs were scored in the first three innings as the No. 1 Buccaneers held off the No. 8 Riders.

Ashlyn Schmidt hit a solo home run for the Riders while Margaret McCarthy had two of CR’s five hits. Peyton Shields pitched a six-hitter for the Riders (16-3), which had a six-game winning streak snapped.

Girls’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 19, Wilmington Charter 4: The top-seeded Vikings jumped out to a 13-2 halftime lead before winning the DIAA state quarterfinal matchchup.

The Vikings next face No. 4 Tower Hill in Saturday’s semifinals at Delaware State.

Elizabeth Rishko netted six goals on Saturday with Molly Mendes adding three goals and five assists. Louise Rishko added three goals and an assist as Cape outshot the Force, 26-11.

Sussex Academy 15, Wilm. Friends 5: The second-seeded Seahawks rolled into the state semifinals behind four goals and a pair of assists from Annabella Guckes.

Sussex Academy will next take on third-seeded Tatnall Tuesday evening at Delaware State.

Also pacing the Seahawks were Macy Steinwedel (1 assist) and Shelby Manlove with three goals apiece. Peyton Hagy made five saves.

Baseball

Dover 13, Delmarva Christian 2: Hunter Chambers went 4-for-5, hitting for the cycle, as the Senators closed the season with a victory.

Kole Turner, Brandon Yoder and Cole Greene each had two hits apiece for Dover (8-10).

The Royals’ Carter Breasure hit a two-run home run.

Laurel 12, Brandywine 7: The Bulldogs finished the season on a seven-game winning streak to raise their record to 10-7.

Boys’ lacrosse

Smyrna 16, Newark Charter 7: The Eagles picked up the victory to finish their season with a record of 6-9.

Girls’ soccer

Delaware Military 2, Indian River 1: The Seahawks tallied a second-half goal to break a 1-1 tie and oust the Indians in the first round of the DIAA Division II state tournament.

Boys’ volleyball

Indian River 3, Delaware Military 1: The Indians captured the DVBCA state title with a 20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-14 victory on Thursday night.

IR finished 12-3 after winning its final five matches. The Indians avenged regular-season losses to Salesianum and DMA in its last two victories.
