Local roundup: Lake Forest, CR both win baseball tourney openers

Lake Forest High scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings before the No. 17 Spartans downed No. 16 Sussex Central, 7-4, in the opening round of the DIAA baseball state tournament on Thursday afternoon.

The win earns Lake Forest (12-7) a second-round matchup with top-seeded Cape Henlopen on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Lewes.

Thursday’s game was tied 1-1 after five innings. Adam Schiff and Rhett Robbins had RBI in the sixth while Tristin McCray doubled and Quade Gannon scored twice for the Spartans.

Winning pitcher J.D. Mudri struck out four for Lake Forest, which has won five games in a row including a pair of victories over the Golden Knights (10-8). The Spartans lost to Cape Henlopen, 8-6, on April 29 in a game it led 4-0, after two innings.

Central pitcher Brendan Anderson had seven strikeouts while A.J. Cannon had two hits.

Caesar Rodney 9, St. Elizabeth 0: Three CR pitchers combined to throw a two-hitter as the No. 18 Riders blanked the No. 15 Vikings in the first-round contest.

The victory sends CR (11-8) to a second-round matchup at No. 2 Conrad (15-3) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Andrew Rigby, Tate Wisniewski and Steven Donigan combined on the two-hitter while striking out 10. Griffin Tracy (3 RBI) had three of CR’s seven hits while Chris Roscoe (2 hits) hit a two-run home run in the sixth.

The Riders have won four of their last five games.

Indian River 11, Newark Charter 5: The No. 14 Indians built a 7-1 lead after three innings before picking up the opening-round victory.

IR goes to No. 3 Appoquinimink on Saturday for a 1 p.m. second-round game.

The Indians’ 13-hit attack was paced by Roman Keith (3 doubles, 3 runs, 1 RBI) and Colton Benton (2-for-4, homer, 3 RBI, 2 runs).

Sussex Tech 3, Woodbridge 2: Jayryn Sample (3-for-3) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lift the No. 9 Ravens over the No. 24 Blue Raiders.

Sussex Tech plays a 1 p.m. game at No. 8 Concord in Saturday’s second round.

Jonathan Stokley homered for Sussex Tech with reliever Jeremy Vest throwing three-and-a-third shutout innings to earn the win.

Woodbridge was led by Sam Schroeder (2 RBI) and Logan Moran, who had two hits each.

William Penn 11, Smyrna 1: The 20th-seeded Colonials limited the No. 13 Eagles to only two hits in the tournament win.

Connor Strauss and Jacob Macey each had hits for Smyrna (11-8).

College lacrosse

Two Hens named All-Americans: Delaware men’s lacrosse players Owen Grant and Mike Robinson have both been recognized on the USILA D1 All American teams.

Grant was named to the USILA All-American second team. The senior registered a Delaware single-season record of 35 caused turnovers 51 ground balls.

Grant also scored seven goals, including one from 50 yards out.

Robinson received an honorable mention nod after leading Delaware with 53 goals and 68 points. He also collected 43 ground balls and caused six turnovers for the Blue Hens.

College golf

DSU player wins academic honor: Delaware State’s Ana Ferreyra-Heit has earned Southland Conference Women’s Golf All-Academic first-team honors. A Business major, she has the highest grade-point-average (3.80) among the five first-team members.

In addition to the academic honor, Ferreyra-Heit was also named to the All-Southland Conference second-team and the SLC All-Tournament team after helping lead the Hornets to a third-place finish in their first league post-season tournament.

College football

Kickoff time set for Hens-Navy game: Delaware will open the football season on Sept. 3 with a noon kickoff at Navy, the schools have announced. The game will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.

Ryan Carty will make his head coaching debut as the Blue Hens play the Midshipmen for the first time since 2013 but the 18th time overall.
