Cape Henlopen High scored 35 unanswered points in the first half before posting a 42-26 victory over Woodbridge in a non-conference football game on Thursday night.

The win was the first for Vikings’ coach Mike Frederick as Cape Henlopen (1-1) matched its victory total for all last season. The win also avenged a 35-21 loss to the Blue Raiders a year ago as the Vikings snapped a six-game losing streak.

Cape Henlopen returns to action on Sept. 17 with a 1 p.m. game at William Penn.

Woodbridge (0-1) hosts St. Mark’s on Sept. 16.

Smyrna’s Judy sidelined: Smyrna High head football coach Mike Judy will miss the Eagles’ season opener on Friday night due to medical reasons.

Defensive coordinator Dan Wagner will be the acting head coach when Smyrna plays a 7 p.m. contest at Arundel, Md. (1-0).

DSU’s Guthrie says he’s tranferring: Delaware State defensive back Esaias Guthrie has announced that he’s entering the NCAA Transfer Portal.

“This is one of the hardest days of my life,” Guthrie wrote in a social-media post. “To even have to announce I am leaving the school I loved playing for, fully believe in and wanted to be a part of helping to put DSU on the map for all the DE football players coming up is an extreme weight on me.

“I hope everyone stays with me on my journey to my next football home,” he wrote, after thanking a number of people. “I promise I’ll make y’all proud.”
