Local roundup: C-W Gold advances in tourney; Blue Hens get QB commit

Camden-Wyoming Gold downed Dover-White, 12-0, to advance in the District I Deak Deakins baseball tournament on Sunday.

The C-W squad, which was playing its opener, will play again on Monday at 7 p.m. at Felton against Smyrna-Clayton Red.

Leading C-W Gold was Austin Short, who had three hits, including a home run and a triple. Raiden Sheets added two hits, with a home run and a triple.

Easton Wilson (triple), Malachi LaMotte (double), Kaden Ressler (double) and Kellan Slater all added two hits for C-W Gold.

Smyrna-Clayton Red 8, Camden-Wyoming Blue 2: The Smyrna-Clayton squad advanced with the win on Sunday.

Pacing Smyrna-Clayton Red were Liam Roberts (2 hits, double), Eli Roger (1 hit), Wade McMaster (3 hits, double) and Jackson Carter (3 hits).

C-W Blue, which went 1-1 in the tourney, was led by Aiden Jacobs (2 hits), Luke Street (1 hit, 1 RBI) and Mason Hanggi (1 hit, 1 RBI).

Walt Bowers tournament

MOT 9, Smyrna-Clayton 1: Riley Douglass, Caleb Morris and Taylor Zehnder combined to pitch a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts on Sunday.

The Middletown team will take on Milford in the tournament finals on Monday at 6 p.m. at Felton. MOT needs a victory to force a second game for the title on Tuesday.

In Sunday’s win, MOT was led by Riley Douglass (2 runs) and Mason Rittenhouse (1 RBI, 3 runs), who both went 2-for-2.

Shortstop Frankie Petrucci made a big  defensive play with the bases loaded for Smyrna Clayton.

Softball

MOT 18, Felton-Harrington 15: MOT posted the win on Sunday to reach the finals of the District I tournament.

The Middletown all-stars will play Smyrna-Clayton for the title on Monday at 6 p.m. at Felton.

Pacing MOT were Kayla Olsen (4-for-4, home run, 4 RBI), Julianna Perucci (4-for-4, home run, 3 RBI), Audrey Sechrist (2 home runs, 5 RBI) and Rylyn Sinsabaugh (3-for-4, 1 RBI).

Smyrna-Clayton 17, Camden-Wyoming Blue 2: Smyrna-Clayton advanced to the tourney championship with the win on Sunday.

Jeweliana Henry, Aubrey Butcher, Alexis Cool, Gianna Creasey and Avery Wilson all hit home runs for Smyrna-Clayton. Henry, Butcher and Wilson also went 3-for-3.

Rayen VanDunk, Bristol Massey, Hailey Arrighi, Hope Conway, Avery Johnson and Alexis Cool went 2-for-2.

College football

Hens land QB commit: Daniel Lipovski, a senior high school quarterback from Virginia, has verbally committed to Delaware as part of its 2023 football recruiting class.

A 6-foot, 185-pounder from Lake Braddock High who also had offers from Holy Cross, Bryant, Sacred Heart, and St. Francis, he posted his college choice on social media over the weekend.

“Thank you to everyone who has got me to this point,” Lipovski wrote. “I am 100% committed to the University of Delaware.”

Last fall, he accounted for over 3,000 yards with 35 touchdowns passing and rushing. He earned all-district, all-region, and honorable mention all-state honors.
