Letter to the Editor: How Republicans shot themselves in the foot

Posted

The GOP assumed they would be the overall winner in the midterm elections. Their reasoning was deeply flawed.

Basing their concept on assured victory was extremely mistaken. The Republicans’ idea was based on the rational belief that America knew the facts of our beloved country’s current existence. We have been facing inflation rates not seen in decades, high gas prices at the pump and grocery stores that experience daily price increases with no decreases in sight. Ravaging crime rates exist in Democrat-led cities and states, and those leaders do not have the vision to eradicate the nightmare. There are educational issues that parents say they had no place to dispute with the educators in place. The teachers’ union is a very powerful force to contend with.

Republicans believed that Americans would vote their way, because Democrats tolerated all these current difficulties with no solutions for the problems. Seemed to make sense. However, the Democrats were the leading majority in Congress and stated their platform was a positive solution to these ongoing issues.

Republicans had right-wing radical candidates, endorsed by former-President Donald Trump, that kept beating a steady drum saying 2020 was a stolen election, and they lost their elections. The moderate Republican candidates won their states and districts. Americans are concerned with our futures and placing politicians where their problems will be solved. Yes, the Republicans were correct to state the never-ending conditions we live in today. What is the answer to these difficult problems? Do any of these candidates have that answer? Time will tell if they do or not.

Democrats played the long-term voting season game while Republicans focused on Election Day voting. At the moment, it’s too close to call between Georgia Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker, who are in a tight race, and we must see how that ends to know how it will affect America’s future. We are awaiting today the final results as to who is the majority, and it could be a fifty-fifty finality with Vice President Kamala Harris placing her deciding vote for the Democrats in the Senate. In the House, Republicans hold 221 seats, and the Democrats have 213. Looks like American status quo again in our political circus.

President Joe Biden was taking a victory lap as we all learned how well the Democrats performed in this election. Maybe he should rethink that and stop taking the victory lap he believes the Dems have secured. Politics change quickly in all directions. One day, you’re a winner, and the next, you are a loser. Our political leadership should know that there is always the possibility of defeat. You’re riding high in November, then down in December. Will they ever learn that America is their primary goal, not ongoing battles for personal political greatness? Our beloved country deserves their best. Let us pray we receive that gift of American greatness, not business in Washington, D.C., as usual!

May God always bless the United States of America!
