Letter to the Editor: Dover is squandering opportunities to share its history

Posted

On Saturday, Oct. 22, I attended two wonderful historic presentations of our Historical & Cultural Affairs Division. Besides employees of the division, I was one of very few attending. This was so disappointing, and I can’t understand the reason for the low attendance.

The event was publicized in advance, it was a beautiful day to take an excursion, and the subject matter was relevant and engaging. It seems Dover has completely lost the sense of pride it once had in our long-standing history in the formation of this country and, as a result, no longer attracts anyone to visit it (including our own population), except for the Firefly Music Festival or NASCAR races.

I am especially concerned that the City Council seems oblivious to this lack of interest in the historic value of downtown and doesn’t appear to be doing anything to promote our historic value or encourage tourism aimed at our valuable historic resources. Old New Castle has had an economic boom based on their historic buildings. Dover has more history than any city in the entire state, yet we have squandered our opportunity to share this with the world.

What is wrong with us?
