Laurel man charged with assaulting troopers

LAUREL — A 35-year-old Laurel man was charged with three counts of second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer after an altercation with Delaware State Police troopers Wednesday, authorities said.

Jeremy L. Showell was contacted by troopers after a reported domestic incident at a residence in the 28000 block of Seaford Road at approximately 8:05 p.m., DSP spokeswoman Master Cpl. Heather Pepper said. He was acting disorderly and failed to comply with commands to place his hands behind his back when told he was under arrest, police said.

Police said Mr. Showell punched a trooper in the face with a closed fist, causing minor injury. He then fled on foot from officers, according to authorities.

A trooper’s discharge of a taser was ineffective, police said, and Mr. Showell then punched two troopers in the face with a closed fist, causing minor injuries. Mr. Showell was then taken into custody.

The troopers did not require medical attention for their injuries.

Mr. Showell was charged with three counts of second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and felony resisting arrest.

Mr. Showell was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $32,500 cash bond.
