What you should know before you go to Thunder Over Dover

DOVER — The Thunder Over Dover air show is set for Saturday and Sunday at Dover Air Force Base. The shows will be from noon to 4 p.m. each day and will feature both the United States Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

This is the first time at an Air Force installation that both the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and U.S. Navy Blue Angels have co-headlined an event.

Additionally, the U.S. Marine Corps Harrier Demonstration Team, as well as many other acts, will perform.

Here are a few things to know before you go:

The event will be free and open to the public. Food and beverages will be available for purchase onsite. No coolers, please.

Gates will open at 9 a.m. both days. Traffic will not be allowed to line up at the entrance until 9 a.m.

Entrance gates will close at 2:30 p.m. or when parking capacity is reached, whichever comes first.

Spectators traveling from the north need to go into Dover AFB’s North Gate entrance via Exit 97 from Del. 1, from which point they will be directed to park on the ramp.
Spectators traveling from the south need to go into Dover AFB’s Main Gate entrance via Exit 93 from Del. 1, from which point they will be directed to park on the ramp.

Department of Defense ID cardholders may enter through the AMC Museum gate, accessible via Del. 9, from which point they will be directed to park on base near the east end of Atlantic Avenue.

All visitors must view the air show from within the show crowd box. Viewing will not be allowed from the parking area — no tailgating.

The last available parking spot is approximately three-quarter miles from the viewing area. If you want a shorter walk to the viewing area, arrive early in the public access window.

All visitors will be screened at the Entry Control Point, between parking and the show area. This will involve the use of metal detectors and a bag search. Fast lanes will be available for visitors without bags.

Drinking water will be available free of charge at four locations. Bring your own refillable water bottles or purchase one at the show.

The exit-only gate will be open from 2:30 to 7 p.m. or whenever the last car is out.

Visitors are welcome to bring strollers and folding chairs. Camera bags/diaper bags/purses should be no larger than 12 inches by 12 inches. Small bags are permitted, but items larger than a cubic foot are prohibited.

Do not bring toys resembling firearms. Also prohibited are drones, laser pointers, aerosol cans of Silly String, glass containers of any kind, alcohol and illegal drugs, fireworks, bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, roller blades, large umbrellas, portable tents and pets (service animals are allowed).
