SMYRNA — The Eagle Classic lived up to its name.

The Smyrna High Eagles won the team title and had five individual champions in the second annual Eagle Wrestling Classic on Saturday. In their home invitational, the Eagles recorded 228.5 points to win by a healthy margin over second-place Caesar Rodney.

Smyrna was led by champions Nick Natarcola (106 pounds), Cole Sebastianelli (126), Chase Archangelo (132), Nate Bryant (138) and Kalen Wilson (160). Larsen Wilson (170), Hunter Moyer (182), Tony Wuest (195) and Terren Carter recorded second-place finishes for the Eagles.

For coach Kurt Howell, Natarcola’s and Bryant’s victories were extra special because they recorded their first career tournament championships.

“I liked Nick winning his first tournament,” Howell said. “That’s a nice win for him in a pretty decent weight class. I was happy with Nate Bryant too. This year he seems to have gotten much more mature.”

Caesar Rodney earned 176 points behind three individual championship efforts — Cam Hayes (113), Andrew Sudler (170) and Mike Clavier (195, via injury forfeit). Sudler pulled off perhaps the most exciting victory of the night, earning a two-point takedown in the last 10 seconds of his match for a 4-3 decision.

“I got the two and I was just holding him down,” Sudler said. “I didn’t know how much time was left, I just kept holding him until time ran out. There was a lot of adrenaline, a lot of wrestling, and I just got it and held him down.”

Kalen Wilson’s win at 160 for Smyrna was a similar close contest, but Wilson earned a takedown in the third period for a 4-2 decision.

Another Smyrna wrestler who needed to fight through a tight match was Archangelo, a defending state champion. He was tied with Dover’s Anthony Fisher midway through the second period before picking up enough points for an 8-2 result.

The two had just faced each other a week and a half ago in a dual meet, which was also an 8-2 decision for Archangelo.

“He’s a tough wrestler and it excites me having tough matches like that,” Archangelo said. “I had to keep working, going all out and get my arm raised no matter what.”

Natarcola, a freshman, won his match with a pin in 3:26. Bryant’s result was a 10-3 decision while Sebastianelli picked up a major-decision, 9-0.

Sebastianelli had a pin in the quarterfinals and a 9-2 decision in the semis on his way to the top spot on the podium.

“It’s great when you go out and dominate every single match,” Sebastianelli said. “It’s such a great feeling. I was able to muscle him over into a position where I could flip him over to score some points (in the final.)”

St. Georges (152.5 points) finished third in the 10-team field. John Carroll (151) of Maryalnd was fourth while Dover (146) rounded out the top-five.

Nicholas Novarnik of St. Georges earned the meet’s Outstanding Wrestler award after a 2-0 decision victory in the 120-pound championship.
