Freedom Foundation honors MBNA’s legacy

WILMINGTON — The legacy of MBNA was recognized by the Pete du Pont Freedom Foundation on Thursday at the annual Pete du Pont Freedom Award event at the Hotel du Pont.

Former MBNA leaders John Cochran and Lance Weaver accepted the honor on behalf of MBNA.

At its height, MBNA employed 10,000 people in Delaware and was known for supporting organizations such as The Ministry of Caring and The Grand Opera House, as well as scholarships for students at the University of Delaware. MBNA was later purchased by Bank of America.

This year’s award reflected the foundation’s continued focus on entrepreneurship and job creation. Proceeds from the event will support initiatives including the Equitable Entrepreneurial Ecosystem and Reinventing Delaware.

The ceremony also recognized Delaware Creative Economy, represented by attorney Angela Wagner, who was named the 2022 Reinventing Delaware winner.
