Four die in New Castle interstate highway collision

NEW CASTLE - Four people died in a head-on vehicle collision on U.S. 495 Wednesday night, Delaware State Police spokesperson Senior Cpl Jason Hatchell said.

Police said a Ford F-150 was traveling southbound in a northbound lane when it collided with a southbound Toyota Tacoma in the area of U.S. 13 around 11:30 p.m.

A 48-year-old Elkton, Maryland, man who was driving the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt, police said. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

The 41-year-old female driver of the Toyota, from Philadelphia,  was wearing a seat belt and pronounced dead at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin, police said.

There were two occupants inside the Toyota, whose identities have not been confirmed at this time, police said. They were both wearing seat belts and were pronounced deceased at an area hospital.

U.S. 495 northbound was closed between U.S. 95 and U.S. 13 for approximately five hours while the collision was investigated, and the roadway was cleared.
