MILFORD — The governor and the Delaware small business division on Thursday announced the winners of grants designed to help grow small companies in the state at an event held at the location of one of the awardees, the Milford bakery My Sister’s Fault.

The Encouraging Development, Growth and Expansion, or EDGE, program awards up to 10 grants twice a year in a competitive selection process. Five grants are set aside for companies in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics industry. STEM businesses can receive up to $100,000 for eligible expenses, while other companies can receive up to $50,000.

The Puerto Rican inspired bakery served up some of its signature sweets and empanadas for the event, which was held in a room above the business.

Supporting small businesses is “one of the most important things that we do to spur economic development and vitality in our state,” Gov. John Carney said in the run up to announcing the grant winners.

The STEM grant recipients

•Carbon Reform, a Newark company that had developed a carbon dioxide capture technology

•Cosmos Pharmaceuticals, a Middletown business that has designed a pill bottle to combat prescription medication abuse

•Harlton, a Wilmington medical technology company

•G-Flash, a company based in Newark that is looking to commercialize a chemical purification process

•Moonprint Solutions, a Dover engineering company
