Downtown Dover launches mobile digital gift card program

Posted

DOVER – The Downtown Dover Partnership recently launched the new Downtown Dover Dollars digital gift card program that makes it fun and easy to keep local spending local.

And while supplies last, individuals can “buy one get one” digital gift card up to $100 to use at any of more than 25 participating shops and eateries.

“Participating in this program means supporting the heart of what makes our community unique,” said Tina Bradbury, operations manager for the Downtown Dover Partnership (DDP). “Now more than ever, downtown shops need the support of the community.

“The DDP was pleased to bring this program to Dover as it is putting cash directly into the hands of our downtown business owners.”

The Downtown Dover Partnership invested $2,500 into the program as a cash match for the “buy one get one” (BOGO) offer.

To date, 84 gift cards have been purchased, valued at more than $3,500 and nearly $1,500 has already been redeemed at local businesses.

While this BOGO is for limited time, the program will continue and the DDP will provide additional kinds of offers to encourage shopping year-round.

With the digital gift card, individuals can write a personal message and send it as a gift to family, friends and colleagues via email, text, or physical copy.

Recipients can choose to spend their Downtown Dover Dollars in one place or mix it up and spend flexibly at several locations.

“The program is all-digital and always available on cell phone, but buyers can also download and print the card and take into shops,” Ms. Bradbury said. “It’s similar to using a gift card. The merchant keys in the card number and the shop receives payment, just as with a credit card.”

Studies have shown that local independent retailers recirculate 47% of their revenue back into the community, while only 14% of national chains’ revenue stays in the community.

More dramatically, local restaurants recirculate 73% of their revenue back into the community, versus only 30% for national chains.

By supporting local businesses, more money continues circulating through the local community.

This is achieved through a combination of profits paid to local business owners, wages paid to local workers, goods and services procured locally for internal use or resale, and charitable giving within the community.
