DOVER — After Monday’s FBI raid of former President Donald Trump’s Florida Mar-a-Lago estate in search of classified White House records, Delaware political officials offered their reactions.

Legislators from both sides of the aisle discussed the raid, with some supporting the act, and others denouncing it.

In a statement Tuesday, Delaware Republican Party Chairwoman and former state attorney general M. Jane Brady took issue with the FBI’s method of action, comparing the treatment of former President Trump to that of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, and Hillary Clinton.

“Once again, the FBI has exercised its authority with a fervor that is disproportionate to the need in a very selective way. The president had already provided 15 boxes of material to the agency, and if there was more than the government thought it needed, it could have issued a subpoena, not a warrant,” Ms. Brady said.

“At a time when very public action by the FBI has been taken against specific individuals who disagree with the policies of this administration, Hunter Biden has been able to hide in the shadow of his father with no evidence that the FBI is going to take any action. Think of it, the FBI has had Hunter’s laptop longer than President Trump has had those papers. And what of the classified documents it has been established Hillary Clinton shared inappropriately and destroyed?

“Overzealous and selective exercise of power undermines the public‘s confidence in what was once a premier law-enforcement agency. Regulators regulate, investigators investigate, and it takes good leadership to manage how their authority is exercised. Clearly, the leadership in the FBI and the Department of Justice has failed the American people.”

Sen. Sarah McBride, D-Wilmington, took to Twitter after the FBI raid, criticizing the Republican Party for their conduct, as well as former President Trump in a pair of tweets.

“Any accusation by Trump and his sycophants is just an admission. They are the party of projection,” Sen. McBride wrote Monday night.

She followed up her first tweet by writing, “The GOP is ‘tough on crime’ unless it’s their crimes.”

Sen. Colin Bonini, R-Dover, who has previously supported former President Trump and been critical of President Biden, said Tuesday in a statement the raid was an act of intimidation.

“(Tuesday’s) FBI raid at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home was a banana republic-type political hit job,” Sen. Bonini said.

“Using law enforcement to intimidate and silence a political opponent is something we see in third-world countries, not the United States of America. To be perfectly clear, this was 100% politically motivated and the Biden Administration should be roundly denounced for this ridiculous act.”
