Top-seeded Cape Henlopen High topped a group of 10 Henlopen Conference squads that made the 24-team DIAA baseball state tournament field that was determined on Sunday.

As the fifth seed, the Vikings are also the highest-seeded downstate team in the boys’ lacrosse bracket that was also released.

The top eight seeds in the baseball tourney earned first-round byes in the tournament, which begins on Thursday.

Along with Henlopen North champion Cape at No. 1, South champion Delmar also received a bye as the No. 7 seed.

Thursday’s first-round contests start at 4 p.m. In matchups involving Henlopen schools, No. 16 Sussex Central hosts No. 17 Lake Forest, No. 9 Sussex Tech hosts No. 24 Woodbridge, No. 13 Smyrna hosts No. 20 William Penn, No. 18

In Saturday’s second round, No. 1 Cape Henlopen hosts the Central-Lake Forest winner while No. 7 Delmar hosts the winner of the matchup between No. 10 Middletown and No. 23 Sanford.

The tournament continues through June 4 with the last two rounds being played at Wilmington’s Frawley Stadium.

Three downstate squads made the 16-team boys’ lacrosse field.

Fifth-seeded Cape Henlopen will host No. 12 Sussex Academy on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a rematch of last Friday’s Henlopen Conference championship game. Sixth-seeded Caesar Rodney will host No. 11 St. Andrews on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
