Brengle can't complete comeback at Wilmbledon

WIMBLEDON, England — Madison Brengle’s run of four straight first-round wins at Wimbledon came to an end on Tuesday.

The Dover native battled back in the second set before American Lauren Davis pulled away to a 6-2, 7-5 victory in the opening round of the women’s singles’ draw of the Grand Slam tennis event.

Brengle led 4-1 in the second set before Davis won six of the final seven games to advance to the second round. The final game was tied seven times before Davis hit an overhand winner to end the match.

The match lasted an hour and 22 minutes with Davis hitting 31 winners compered to eight for Brengle. Davis made 31 unforced errors while Brengle had 18.

The first set was tied, 1-1, before Davis won three games in a row to take control. The 28-year-old Davis, who is ranked 102 in the world, out-scored Brengle 70-60 in the match.

The 32-year-old Brengle, who is ranked No. 59, hadn’t lost in Wimbledon’s first round since 2016.
