Bill West wins fifth term as Georgetown mayor

GEORGETOWN — Bill West took the fifth and will retain the mayoral gavel as presiding official for Georgetown council sessions for two more years.

Challenged for the first time since his first mayoral run in 2014, the reigning mayor topped Ruth Ann Spicer Saturday, earning a fifth mayoral term in the 2022 municipal election.

The vote margin was 375-227. It was one of the largest voter turnouts in recent memory, according to Town Manager Eugene Dvornick.

“I think the election results told town council they are not happy with the way things have been going. If I was the problem, they would have voted me out of here,” said Mayor West. “The people elected to put me back in here for a reason, to turn this around and get this town continuing to head in the right direction. A town that doesn’t grow is a dead town. I don’t want us to be a dead town. I want us to continue to grow and be somebody.”

This was the first elected office attempt by Ms. Spicer, who plans to remain in tune in town governmental matters.

“I’m still going to stay involved. I hope to come to all the town council meetings,” Ms. Spicer. “I hope that I can still work with Billy. And my ideas that I had on my platform I would like to see those accomplished. He said that we could work together. I just did talk with him, so I look forward to working with him.”

Mayor West agreed.

“And yes, Ruth Ann and I just talked about a police department. Let’s see if we can’t find some funds to do something there and get something started with that. There is a way for us to work together. And it’s not just me, it takes the whole town. It takes everybody to come together and the same thoughts and ideas,” said Mayor West. “I love Ruth Ann to death. We’ve been close for a long time. We’ll work together to make Georgetown a better place.”

Elected to council in 2012, Mayor West served two years, then defeated incumbent Mike Wyatt in 2014 for mayor. He was unopposed the past three elections.

Mayor West, a retired Delaware State trooper, is hoping for improved collaboration from the council.

“We’ve got to stop all the fighting and arguing and get heading in the right direction,” Mayor West said. “That’s my alternative right now, is to get this council headed in the right direction.”

Mayor was the only contested race in Saturday’s election. Incumbent council members Angela Townsend (Ward 3) and Penuel Barrett (Ward 4) were unopposed.
