Big Draw a big deal in Milford

Fourth annual art event fully live once again Oct. 8

MILFORD — The Big Draw Festival will be back Oct. 8, promising a day colored with creative activities for all ages.

The free event, now in its fourth year, will take place downtown from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Organizers from the Mispillion Art League say things will be back in full swing for 2022, after the past couple festivals were scaled back due to the pandemic. There will be plenty of in-person activities, including colorful mask-crafting, sandcastle-building and, of course, lots and lots of opportunities for drawing.

“We’re really excited about it,” said chair Rosemary Connelly. “It’s a thrill to be able to really do it live again.”

The day will see the Big Draw Festival completely take over Park Avenue, closing the street to traffic but leaving it open for fun.

A giant wall of paper for doodling will extend halfway down the road, and its sidewalk will be a canvas for chalk art, with the league providing plenty of supplies.

And you won’t be able to miss the giant, 8-ton pile of sand in the middle of Park Avenue for constructing all kinds of creations. Expert sandcastle architects Darrell O’Connor and the Delaware State News’ own Andy West will be creating demo fortresses out of the grains all day. They’ll be happy to give lessons, too.

“We enjoy interacting with kids and adults who are interested in learning how it’s done,” said Mr. West, executive editor at the newspaper.

“The whole thing with sand art is that it’s about the experience and being in the moment, you know?” he said. “It’s a great chance to just be with people and enjoy being creative.”

The Big Draw Festival is an international event, with the first one in the United Kingdom two decades ago. This year’s theme is “Come Back to Colour,” celebrating the joys of every shade.

The Mispillion Art League plans on making that easy for people of all ages and artistic abilities. All you have to do is be there.

“It’s free, completely free,” Ms. Connelly said. “They just have to show up on (next) Saturday ... and plan to have fun.”
