MILFORD — Milford will be getting another grocery shopping option later this year when ALDI opens in the Milford Plaza shopping center on U.S. 113.

The Germany-based international grocery chain confirmed to the Delaware State News that it plans to open in Milford in 2022.

“We are excited to confirm we are planning to open a new ALDI store in Milford, Delaware, later this year, but do not have further details to share at this time,” said Jeff Baehr, ALDI Frederick Division vice president.

Mr. Baehr also confirmed, though with little detail, that the company plans to open more locations in the region in 2022.

“We also are planning to open three total stores on the Delmarva Peninsula this year,” he said.

These new locations are part of the retailer’s aggressive expansion plan to open 100 new stores across the country in 2022.

“When it comes to choosing new store locations, we carefully consider several factors. Bottom line, we look for convenient locations for our customers that can support a high traffic volume daily,” Mr. Baehr told the Delaware State News.

ALDI currently has more than a dozen stores on the Delmarva Peninsula, opening its most recent location in Rehoboth Beach last year.

In January, the town of Millsboro approved plans for a 19,334-square-foot ALDI location in the Peninsula Crossing Center that is also expected to be open later this year. It is unclear if the Millsboro store is one of the three confirmed Delmarva locations.

News that ALDI may be coming to Milford broke in July of last year when James Grant — a representative from Tsionas Management, which owns Milford Plaza — went before the Milford City Council to ask it to approve changes to the shopping center that need to occur to accommodate the new grocery store. The council approved the moves unanimously last summer.

Mr. Grant said ALDI plans to occupy the space once used by Save A Lot and the current Sherman-Willams location next door. The paint retailer will move down to the former Sears location.

Work is expected to start soon on planned renovations to make the move and new store possible.

Sherman-Williams will also be getting a new sign along U.S. 113 marking their new location.
