Local Roundup: Sussex Tech pulls out victory in eighth

Carson Mears’ two-run, two-out double in the top of the eighth inning lifted Sussex Tech to a 5-3 victory over St. Georges in a non-conference baseball matchup on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks tied the contest at 3-3 on Nathan Arterbridge’s two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh in the game played at Frawley Stadium.

Sussex Tech pitcher Grant Allen allowed just two hits and three hits while striking out nine in seven and a third innings. Kade Hall, Jonathan Stokley, Jaryn Sample and Malikye Wells accounted for the Ravens’ other hits.

Sussex Tech improved to 11-5 with the win. The game was the fourth straight for the Ravens decided by two runs or less.

Indian River 5, Newark Charter 0: Chance Hocker pitched a complete-game four-hitter to earn the shutout for the Indians on Friday.

Hocker, who threw 108 pitches, struck out eight. Frank Bunting went 2-for-3 with an RBI for IR, while Roman Keith and Ben Cordrey each added a hit and RBI.

Softball

Henlopen title game suspended: The Henlopen Conference softball championship game was suspended by rain on Saturday with Sussex Central leading Delmar 1-0 in the third inning.

No decision had been made on when the contest will be completed.

Middletown 9, Dover 3: The Senators closed the season at 6-12 after the non-conference setback.

Red Lion Christian 10, Smyrna 0: Angelina Edwards threw a six-inning four-hitter as Red Lion blanked the Eagles on Friday night.

The Lions (13-3) hit four home runs in the contest. Smyrna finishes the season with a record pf 8-10.

Girls’ lacrosse

Milford 23, Conrad 12: The Buccaneers finished the season with a record of 6-8 after posting the win on Saturday.

St. Mark’s 9, Polytech 6: The Panthers ended the regular season with a record of 8-7 after the loss.

The DIAA state tournament committee meets on Sunday morning to determine the field.

Boys’ lacrosse

Caravel 17, Dover 5: The Buccaneers snapped the Senators’ seven-game winning streak on Friday night.

Dover ends the regular season with a record of 9-6.

St. Andrew’s 17, Milford 8: Shane Sylvester, Landon Hudson and Kolin Thompson all had two goals and an assist for the Buccaneers, who finished season with a record of 4-11.

Girls’ soccer

Sussex Central 7, Odyssey Charter 0: Bayleigh Perdue netted four goals and a pair of assists in the Golden Knights’ win on Friday.

Kathy Sanchez Garcia added two goals for Central (7-4-1), who held advantages of 21-3 in shots and 6-0 in corner kicks.

College football

Panthers to look at Hens’ Coleman: Delaware receiver Gene Coleman has earned an invitation to attend rookie minicamp with the Carolina Panthers.

Coleman is the fourth Blue Hen this spring to receive a minicamp invite. Last weekend, Nijuel Hill and Dejoun Lee took part in minicamp with the Washington Commanders, while David Kroll received a pair of minicamp invites, participating with the Chicago Bears last weekend and the Indianapolis Colts this weekend.

Coleman ranked second on the team with 31 catches for 426 yards and a pair of touchdowns last fall. In 52 career games, he caught 124 passes for 1,461 yards, averaging 11.8 yards per catch.

College baseball

William & Mary 5, Delaware 2: The Tribe hit three late home runs to break open a pitchers’ duel.

The Blue Hens (23-24) trailed 4-0 in the eighth inning when J.J. Freeman doubled and Joey Loynd crushed his eighth homer of the year to left center. But Delaware never got any closer as it fell to 6-13 in the CAA.

College softball

DelTech rained out: Delaware Tech’s Region 19 championship game against Mercer County was suspended by rain on Saturday.

DelTech is now slated to host Mercer on Tuesday at 1 p.m. needing to win twice to take the Region 19 title.

With a regular-season record 28-2, DelTech is the top seed in the three-team, double-elimination tournament.

DelTech’s offense is led by freshman third baseman Macey Myers (Milford), who was batting .475 with 48 hits, 50 RBI, and six home runs. Freshman shortstop Carlin Quinn (Cape Henlopen) is right behind with a .480 batting average, 36 hits, and 27 RBI.

Freshman infielder Kylie Kruger (Sussex Central) is batting .433 with 45 hits and 30 RBI, and freshman outfielder Kandice Schlabach (Delmarva Christian) is batting .440 with 37 hits, 33 RBI, and eight home runs.

Couri Smith (Laurel) is batting .469 with 45 hits, 20 RBI, and 15 stolen bases while Logan Walls (Delmar) is batting .426 with 40 hits, 25 RBI, and nine stolen bases.

Starting pitcher Lauren Smith was 12-1 during the regular season with 62 strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA. Carly Collins (Sussex Central) was 11-1 during the regular season with 59 strikeouts and a 1.27 ERA, best in the region.
