Indian River High drafting plans for Military Honor Wall

DAGSBORO — Alison Walt’s family tree has multiple branches of military service.

Her father served in World War II, her father-in-law in Korea. Her brother was deployed to Vietnam and a nephew has been in Kuwait and Iraq multiple times.

With that background, the Indian River High School chemistry teacher is now working to salute alumni who have served in the armed forces with a Military Honor Wall at the school.

While the exact location is to be determined, principal Mike Williams said, “Once we get it together, we are looking to display in one of the main hallways.”

The idea, spawned from a similar initiative at Ms. Walt’s alma mater, North Dorchester High School in Hurlock, Maryland, is to recognize “any and all” IR grads with military ties.

“I had seen my high school that I graduated from … had posted (online) that they were looking for photo submissions for a similar project, where they had each branch of the military and had pictures of alumni that they were honoring,” said Ms. Walt. “I shared it.”

Social media connection then fed the idea to Indian River. “It just sort of snowballed from there,” she added.

She contacted the school’s Alumni Association, which is “helping in any capacity.”

IRHS is accepting submissions for the wall. Veterans or active-duty members of any branch of the military, or their families, are encouraged to send in photos and biographical information, including graduation year, to alison.walt@irsd.k12.de.us. Photos should be JPG or other high-resolution formats.

Photos can also be mailed to Indian River High School, Military Honor Wall, 29772 Armory Drive, Dagsboro, DE 19939, attn.: Alison Walt.

There are several options for presentation under consideration. Photos with bios could be framed and sorted into the specific branches. They might also be placed on a display board.

Ms. Walt hopes to have the honor wall in place during the 2022-23 year. A dedication ceremony also is a possibility.

“In my vision, I would love it to be sometime during next school year and then ongoing, with new people, like in such a way we can add to it as time goes on,” she said.

“A lot of people that went here have done lots of service to the military, and they definitely deserve to have their pictures up.”
