History will come alive at Harrington Heritage Day

HARRINGTON — This small town has some big history.

And, to celebrate it, the 46th annual Harrington Heritage Day will take place starting at 9 a.m. Aug. 24 around the city.

Organizers say the streets will be filled with lots to do.

“It will have the typical craft vendors, food vendors, informational booths, kids’ zone, petting zoo with pony rides and entertainment stages,” said Doug Poore, curator for the Harrington Historical Society.

He added that it’s a great time for residents, as well as visitors, to come together.

“It’s a chance for the community as a whole to get together, whether it’s for history or food or fun,” Mr. Poore noted, adding that Harrington’s traditions go way back and include railroads, rock ‘n’ roll and many other milestones.

“There’s a reason why it was called the ‘hub of Delaware,” he said, “because this is where all the railroads came together. It’s amazing the history we have.”

In addition, Mr. Poore said it will be a time for festivalgoers to learn something new about Harrington.

“There is a lot of history that people just don’t know,” he added.

The three buildings owned by the society will be open during the event. Plus, an old-fashioned soda machine will be a featured, serving guests classic drinks.

Admission to Heritage Day is free.
