DOVER — The National Weather Service issued an Extreme Heat Warning until 8 p.m. on June 25 for New Castle County, and a Heat Advisory for the Delaware Beaches until 8 p.m. on June 24.
In the northern part of the state, heat index values as high as 108 degrees can be expected, the weather service warned. At the beaches, index values could reach 100 degrees, it said.
High humidity and low temperatures between 70-80 degrees overnight will not offer much relief from the sweltering heat, it continued.
The service advises drinking plenty of fluids, limiting outdoor activity, staying in air-conditioned facilities and checking up on neighbors and relatives. It warns against leaving children and pets in unattended vehicles, as temperatures can reach lethal levels in minutes.
Those without access to air conditioning or shelter can call 211 for assistance.
In response, both Sussex and Kent Counties have opened cooling stations.
