PRINCESS ANNE — During Black History Month the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Black Cinema Series will showcase several feature films that the public is welcome to attend at the Student Service Center Theater.
Each of these showings is free, and will be followed by a fun panel discussion.
On Friday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. the 1988 musical drama comedy film “School Daze” directed and starring Spike Lee will be shown. This was Lee’s second feature film, and is based partly on his experiences as a student at Morehouse College in the Atlanta University Center during the 1980s.
On Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. the 1967 movie “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” will be shown. This film features Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier and Katharyn Hepburn, and Hepburn's niece Katharine Houghton, and explores the challenges of an interracial couple who announce their plan to marry.
On Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. “love jones,” a 1997 American romantic comedy drama will be featured.
On Tuesday, Feb. 18 the biographical drama about Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman to elected to Congress and a presidential candidate in 1972, will be shown. Regina King is the star of this movie released in 2020.
On Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. the 2014 historical drama “Selma” about the 1965 Civil Rights marches will be shown. This Best Picture features David Oyelowo as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
On Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 the movie “Akeelah and the Bee” will be screened. This 2006 film tells the story of Akeelah Anderson, an 11-year-old girl living in South Los Angeles, who participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
In addition to these movies, on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at noon, the Inaugural Presidential Lecture Series hosts Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, a celebrated voice for social justice, Black culture and transformative leadership, at the Ella Fitzgerald Center on campus.
