PRINCESS ANNE — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore will celebrate the 135th anniversary of the Second Morrill Act with a wellness walk and the second annual Dean’s Award for Student Leadership (DASL) Expo on Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22.

Activities begin at 10 a.m. with a 1.890 mile walk through campus for which the public is invited, starting outside the Ella Fitzgerald Performing Arts Center and ending in the Student Activity Quad between the Student Services Center and the Hytche Athletic Center (which will be the walk location in the event of rain).

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Student Services Center the expo will showcase student clubs from the School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences (SANS), their activities, and leadership initiatives to the campus community.

It will also introduce the UMES Sustainability Committee in keeping with its broad sustainable development theme and a GreenHawk sustainability pledge.

In addition to SANS, the co-host is NorthBay Education and the UMES chapter of the Environmental Science Association — winners of the 2024 DASL Award.

Co-hosted by NorthBay Education and the UMES chapter of the Environmental Science Association (winners of the 2024 DASL Award), this on campus event celebrates Earth Day and the Second Morrill Act in 1890 which established for Black students 19 land-grant colleges including what is today UMES.
